In preparation for FESTAC '77, Nigeria asked Britain to return the looted mask of Queen Idia, which had been chosen as the symbol of the festival. The British Museum refused but suggested that the mask could be loaned to Nigeria for a fee of £2m. Nigeria rejected the offer.
To this day, the mask remains in London at the British Museum. We hope it will one day return home to Nigeria.
